LEWISTON, Idaho – Daniel Mondejar’s run-scoring single with two out in the top of the ninth gave St. Thomas a 3-2 lead over reigning Avista NAIA World Series champion and Orlando Rodriguez shut down the Fire in the bottom of the ninth to preserve his victory and send Bobcats on their way in the winners’ bracket.
Southeastern, with Felix Dieguez throwing no-hit ball through five innings, scored in the first and sixth innings for a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the eighth. Gus Guerra led off the top of the eighth for St. Thomas with a single and came home on Jackie Urbaez’ blast over the left-field fence to even the score at two.
After Mondejar’s go-ahead RBI in the top of the ninth, Adam Delacruz reached on a single with two out in Southeastern’s half of the ninth. The game ended when Willie Estrade flied out to Daniel Lowry in center field.
St. Thomas (46-13) is off until 7 p.m. Monday, while Southeastern (51-11) plays the loser of Friday’s late game between Lewis-Clark State College and Freed-Hardeman Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
