LEWISTON, Idaho – Alejandro Rivero’s two-run home run powered a four-run third inning for St. Thomas as the Bobcats downed Georgia Gwinnett 4-1 to stay alive in the 2019 Avista NAIA World Series on Wednesday afternoon at Lewis-Clark State College’s Harris Field.

Daniel Mondejar led off the inning with a single. Daniel Lowry came in to run for Mondejar and moved to second when Chris Allende walked. Lowry scored on Jackie Urbaez’ sacrifice fly for a 1-0 St. Thomas lead and Allende followed him across the plate for a 2-0 edge on Erick Delgado’s single through the hole at shortstop.

Rivero’s blast over the left field fence brought in Delgado and staked the Bobcats to a 4-0 lead.

Georgia Gwinnett scored once in the fourth but the battle became one of defense and pitching. Orlando Rodriguez, in his six innings for St. Thomas, allowed six hits and the one run with Jason Grana allowing one hit and no runs in his three innings of relief.

St. Thomas advances to Thursday’s game at 7 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday night’s Tennessee Wesleyan or Science and Arts game.
