LEWISTON, Idaho – Brody Wofford’s third grand slam of the season powered Georgia Gwinnett past Faulkner, 6-3, during Friday’s rainy opening round of the Avista NAIA World Series at Lewis-Clark State College’s Harris Field.
After a three hour, 15-minute delay to the start of the game matching the fourth and fifth seeds, Wofford’s blast in the top of the fifth inning gave the Grizzlies (47-11) a lead, 4-1, that they never relinquished. Faulkner (49-11) made a couple of surges but never enough to overcome Georgia Gwinnett. With the victory, Georgia Gwinnett doesn’t play until Monday at 3 p.m. while Faulkner heads into the elimination round Saturday morning at 8:30 against Bellevue.
All told, the Grizzlies used 11 hits – four from Alex Garland, who went 4-for-5, to tally their six runs. Onassis Matos added two RBI to account for Georgia Gwinnett’s other two runs.
