LEWISTON, Idaho – Kyle Callahan blasted two home runs in going five-for-five to lead 10th-ranked Lewis-Clark State College to a 10-5 victory over No. 7 Freed-Hardeman in the final game of the opening day of the 2019 Avista NAIA World Series.
Both of Callahan’s home runs were solo shots (one in the second and one in the fourth) but they were the perfect additions to the 6-0 lead the Warriors built in the first inning. LCSC batted through the order in the top of the first without an out. Thomas Lampkin Jr. led off the game with a home run over the left-field fence to set off a run of eight successive Warriors reaching base with five of them scoring.
Freed-Hardeman picked up three runs in the fourth and added one more in both the fifth and seventh innings but it was never enough to truly threaten the Warriors.
A.J. Davis drove in a couple of insurance runs for LCSC with a two-out single in the top of the ninth.
The Warriors take on Science & Arts Saturday night at 7 p.m. with Freed-Hardeman playing reigning national champion Southeastern Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
